Chichester Tip Opening Times: Closed Tuesdays From October

Chichester tip, the recycling centre on Coach Road at Westhampnett, is now on winter hours: 9am to 4pm, and closed on Tuesdays. The county’s booking system, checked on 4 October 2026, offers no Tuesday slots at all on 6 or 13 October, and the last slot each day starts at 3.30pm. The centre’s own page now says so too. You must book a slot online before you drive there.

The quick answer

Updated 17 October: the county’s Chichester centre page now lists the winter hours day by day, 1 October to 31 March: 9am to 4pm, closed on Tuesdays. No county winter-hours release has appeared this year.

Westhampnett tip this week: what the booking system shows

We read the county’s Book to Recycle slot calendar for the fortnight from Sunday 4 October to Sunday 18 October 2026. It is the most reliable source for which days a tip is open, because a day with no slots is a day the gate is shut.

Almost every Westhampnett slot was still free when we looked, so a same-day or next-day booking is realistic outside weekends. If you live in the city and Tuesday is the only day you can go, Bognor Regis is the nearest tip open that day.

The tips that serve the Chichester district

The tips are run by West Sussex County Council, not Chichester District Council. Summer hours are from the county’s own centre pages; winter days are from its autumn and winter hours release for October 2025 to March 2026.

The Tuesday closure at Westhampnett is the trap. Until mid October the centre’s page said only that the centre “will be open until 4pm” in winter, with no word of a Tuesday closure. By 17 October it had been rewritten to list each day: Monday 9am to 4pm, Tuesday closed, Wednesday to Sunday 9am to 4pm, between 1 October and 31 March. The county’s release for last winter listed Chichester as open “Monday, Wednesday to Sunday”, and it did the same the winter before, from 1 October 2024. As of 17 October 2026 the county has not issued a release for this winter (last year’s came out on 26 September), and its booking system runs the same pattern: no Tuesday slots at Westhampnett.

Christmas and New Year

The county’s release for last winter said “all centres will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day”. This year those fall on:

• Friday 25 December 2026
• Saturday 26 December 2026 (Boxing Day itself; the bank holiday is Monday 28 December)
• Friday 1 January 2027

We have not seen the county say whether a centre opens on the substitute bank holiday, Monday 28 December. The booking system shows which days have slots, so check it before you load the car. The county warns that “demand is high over certain periods, such as bank holidays”.

Selsey and the Witterings mobile tips

A mobile recycling service visits Selsey (East Beach car park) and the Witterings (Marine Drive car park) on alternate Thursdays, 8.15am to 3pm, with no booking needed. The dates are from the county’s mobile centres page.

So between 17 December and 14 January, Selsey has no visit for four weeks.

Booking rules

From the county’s Book to Recycle page:

• Up to five visits per calendar month per household.
• Book up to 14 days ahead, or the same day if a slot is free. Phone bookings on 01243 642106.
• Slots are 15 or 30 minutes; Midhurst and Bognor use 15-minute slots.
• You need the vehicle’s registration, and it cannot be changed after booking.
• You do not need to book if you arrive on foot, by bicycle or on a mobility scooter.

Vans are restricted. Neither Chichester nor Midhurst will take Luton vans, horseboxes, twin-axle trailers, tippers, flatbeds or vehicles over 3.5 tonnes; Midhurst also has a 2.2 metre height barrier, and Bognor will not take trailers of any kind.
